Diabetes Peptides & Obesity Peptides

What is Diabetes Mellitus?

Diabetes is an endocrine disease leading to very high blood sugar levels caused by either the pancreas not producing enough insulin (diabetes type 1 or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus), or the cells of the body becoming insulin resistant (diabetes type 2 or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus). As of 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 537 million adults were living with diabetes, making up 10.5% of the global population. Additionally, Diabetes is among the top 10 causes of death, accounting for approximately 4.2 million deaths every year, many caused by lack of or poor treatment.

Peptide-Based Treatments for Diabetes

The common treatment for diabetes type 1 is insulin replacement therapy. However, Type 2 diabetes is typically managed with a combination of anti-diabetic medications (such as metformin), lifestyle changes, and newer peptide-based treatments like semaglutide and other GLP-1 receptor agonists
Lately, significant progress has been made in diabetes treatment by focusing on peptide drugs such as Glucagon-like Peptide 1 (GLP-1) and Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (GIP) and their receptors.

Applications of Peptides in Diabetes & Obesity

Therapeutic Applications of Diabetes Peptides

Peptides are significant throughout diabetes research, for diagnostics and treatments. They are analogs of pancreatic and gastrointestinal peptide hormones involved in the control of blood sugar.
  • GLP-1 and its analogs, such as liraglutide and semaglutide, have been proven to stimulate the release of insulin, reduce glucagon secretion, and slow down gastric emptying, which helps regulate blood sugar levels.
  • These gastrointestinal peptide hormones are not only effective in treating Type 2 diabetes, but they are also vital in weight management. This is particularly important, as over 80% of Type 2 diabetics are obese, and obesity is a major risk factor for developing diabetes.
  • GLP-1 peptides help in reducing body weight, improving glycemic control, and lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases associated with diabetes and obesity. Dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists are currently being explored as an advanced approach to treat diabetes and obesity, aiming to enhance insulin release and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications even further.

Diagnostic Uses of C-Peptide in Diabetes

C-peptide, a peptide produced in equal amounts with insulin, serves as a valuable diagnostic tool in diabetes management. By measuring C-peptide levels, healthcare professionals can assess how much insulin the pancreas is producing.
  • C-peptide for Type 1 Diabetes: Individuals with Type 1 diabetes generally exhibit low or undetectable levels of C-peptide, indicating little or no endogenous insulin production.
  • C-peptide for Type 2 Diabetes: In contrast, Type 2 diabetes patients typically have normal or increased levels of C-peptide, which reflects insulin resistance rather than a lack of insulin production.

In addition to helping differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, C-peptide tests can also distinguish between endogenous insulin (naturally produced by the body) and exogenous insulin (injected insulin), as synthetic insulin does not contain C-peptide.
