Pep-1 peptide or PEP1, or PTD (protein transduction domain) is a well-characterized amphipathic cell penetrating peptide that is able to transport proteins and other macromolecules to the cell nucleus. Pep-1 localizes rapidly to the nucleus via an endocytosis-independent process. Pep-1 comprises a hydrophobic, tryptophan-rich domain; a hydrophilic domain derived from the NLS (nuclear localization signal) of large T antigen from SV40, and a spacer between them. Described by Morris et al. 1997.
